The tragedy in Newtown, CT has finally forced serious discussion about gun control in America and the possibility for action. Everyday in America guns are the cause of the loss of life of thousands. Whether guns are used against persons known or strangers it is a daily reality and part of the tapestry of this country. There have been the many terroristic attacks around the country against innnocent workers, students, shoppers, etc. which capture media attention nationwide. There are the crimes of passion, murder-suicides, and accidental shootings. There are the almost routine attacks on the battlefields of our innner cities. So commonplace that they rarely capture the attention of the media. Many feel it is a constitutional right to bear arms. The hunter may have need of a hunting rifle... The merchant may have need of a pistol to ward off robberies... But who has need of assault weaponry? And your basic criminal considers it his right as well.
